A Beautiful Site On The Isle of Wight

We are excited to be auctioning one of the Isle of Wight’s most prominent buildings at our Fareham auction on 2 November; the Prince Consort building in Ryde. This 19th century property overlooks the Solent and, as its name suggests, has a rich royal-tinged history!

Royal Connections

The building was completed in 1847 at a cost of £4,500 and its foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert in the spring of the previous year. The Prince Consort building was previously known as the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, set up by Queen Victoria to rival the male-only Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes.

The four-storey building was a yacht club until 1966. Since then it has had a varied history, first as a restaurant and then in more recent years, the upper two floors were converted into stunning apartments enjoying wonderful views and the convenience of a town centre location, with the lower two floors being used for commercial purposes, including more recently as a call centre.

Location, Location, Location

The Prince Consort building has an enviable location. Apart from its waterside locale and stunning sea views, the property boasts Ryde Pier, a tennis club, Ryde Esplanade train station, Ryde Hoverport, and Union Street, one of Ryde’s main shopping thoroughfares, all within a 5 minute walk! The hovercrafts that leave nearby are also the fastest route to the mainland.

And That’s Not All!

The freehold of the building comes with two planning consents for conversion/part conversion of the two lower floors, to include a stunning 371 sq.m. (4,000 sq.ft) apartment, subject to conditions. As the owner, you will have the option as to which consent to pursue.

Furthermore, Planning Permission has been granted by Isle of Wight Council for proposed internal and external alterations, including the replacement of access gates, refurbishing the lower ground floor offices and converting part of the lower ground floor and ground floor to a residential unit, subject to conditions.

This historic building would make a great hotel or luxury apartment building. The gated front of the property offers car parking for several vehicles, with the rear walled garden offering further parking options, subject to a licence arrangement.

The Prince Consort building goes to auction 2 November at the Solent Hotel & Spa in Fareham, Hampshire, with a guide price of £650,000 - £700,000 plus fees. More details about the property can be found in our current auctions section. To arrange a viewing please call 01489 564606. This is a property not to be missed!
